The rail height adjuster does not make your knives any sharper but it is much sturdier and is not prone to loosening up as was the original rod system. Despite repeated tightening of the collar on the original rod, it would come loose after awhile. The rail height adjuster should be the default in how the system is delivered. It is so nice, easy, stable and repeatable.

Great piece of kit and should be standard on all Hapstone sharpeners even if it does increase the price slightly. Wouldn’t be without it now. Thanks Hapstone and Gritomatic

The new Rail Height Adjuster added a great deal of solidity to an already solid R2. A little documentation would have been nice, but my question was answered.

Very solid, easy to adjust, just cannot use a thickness collar for different stones. Never used the stock rod but bought it because of reviews they wobble a bit. 4 stars because of cost, should be on all new models as an improvement at a small cost increase.

This addition eliminates the issue of the vertical travel limit screws loosening . It is significantly more precise in the ability to dial in sharpening angle.

I have had the R2 for a couple years, and loved it. Recently bought the upgrade Rail Height Adjuster and it is a very nice improvement. Rock solid and much easier to adjust the angle instead of the original rod. Nice that it includes an easy to use place to keep the stone holder suspended out of the way that doesn't require moving the lever like the old one. I was constantly forgetting to mover that lever out of the way and subsequently compromising the angle I had set. My bad, not a design flaw, just the new one is better.

Just received this yesterday and have installed and used it for a few knives now. Quite an improvement from the original rod. Much much easier to adjust and rock solid. Really does make a difference in the feel and use of the R2. Well worth the investment. Hapstone should make this the standard for all their sharpeners. As usual for Hapstone, no instructions, but it's very easy to figure how to install it. Only takes a couple minutes.

First time use I sharpened two knives one folder a Benchmade Nakamura M390, and a Randell five inch stainless. Worked great, would buy again. Used Digital Angle Gauge on each stone. Smooth and stayed in place

This upgrade makes the Hapstone modular system feel like an entirely different ,and more precise system. Fast and easy to install. It makes super smooth fine tuning easy and best of all, it removes all wobble that the original metal rod has so everything is more tight and solid. It really does make it feel like a whole new higher quality system. The only negative I have noticed is that it seems to restrict the steepest angle you can set more than the original but still higher than you'd need for a knife. I noticed while using the scissor attachment (where the scissor blade is held vertical so higher is actually more acute). I couldn't raise the hight to make the angle any steeper than about 56.5° which is more than enough for most scissors anyway, but this pair needed more like 60°. Luckily you can put the scissor attachment on upside down which lowers the blade a couple inches and solves the problem. The only other complaint I have is that it seems pretty expensive for what it is. I'd recommend it a lot more if it were more like $60 because it's more of an upgrade than a necessity. Still, it fixes the hight bar wobble which bugged me a little and adds precision and convenience. Great upgrade.
